Late Victorian Crayon Portrait of a Child, c. 1890s | Antique Boston Studio Photograph with Original Backing

An authentic late 19th-century crayon portrait enlargement, professionally produced by a Boston photographic studio and finished by hand in charcoal and graphite. Crayon portraits were created from original photographs, enlarged at great expense, and then carefully worked by an artist to soften features and enhance expression. It was a short-lived process that disappeared by the turn of the century.
The original studio backing remains intact, referencing “Permanent Crayon Portraits” and detailing the studio’s services, including the copying and enlargement of photographs and a specialty in photographing children. This backing provides rare documentation of the process and firmly anchors the piece in the late Victorian period.
Why We Love It-
Crayon portraits occupy a fascinating moment between photography and drawing—intimate, labor-intensive, and deeply personal. Children’s examples are especially scarce, often commissioned as cherished family keepsakes. This piece carries a quiet gravity that feels both tender and enduring.
