Nearly two centuries old — an exceptional survivor in rare green.
An extraordinary early 19th-century English transferware deep plate dating to the 1830s, likely produced by a Staffordshire pottery during the Romantic Revival period.
Rendered in a rare green transfer — a tone far less common than the traditional blues or browns — this piece features an intricate pastoral scene of Gothic ruins framed by trees, figures, and a faithful dog, capturing the Romantic era’s fascination with nostalgia, decay, and beauty in imperfection.
The generous 10.25-inch diameter and softly domed form distinguish it from ordinary flat plates; this deeper “soup” or “pudding” plate style is far less often found intact. Its scalloped edge and floriate border display the height of 1830s English ceramic artistry.
The glaze shows authentic age crackling (crazing) and bears two early workshop marks on the reverse: an impressed “L” and a hand-painted “6” — indicators of small-batch production before standardized factory stamping.
